18 killed in AP rains

New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh, like Tamil Nadu, is suffering the lash of severe rains. The death toll has now gone up to 18.

Flash floods have hit some parts of the state. Nellore is the worst hit, with Prakasam, Kadapah and Chittoor districts being badly affected, as well.

Naidupet in Nellore has recorded 310 mm of rainfall in the past week.

Laksmi Reddy, SP of Nellore said that relief operations in the flash flood-hit areas were on in full swing.

Four people were killed there when a state-owned bus carrying a marriage party was trapped in a whirlpool.

“A Qualis and a mini-bus were stranded in flood water, early on Monday. Out of eight people, only four were rescued,” he said, adding that 97 relief camps have been organised and food packets are being dropped.

Flood waters from the Samba-leru Canal have also overflowed onto the railway track near Gudur. Road and rail traffic through the area remains affected.

The cyclone alert remains in place and rail and road traffic remains badly hit.

The Met office predicts very heavy rains in the state for Wednesday.
