Flood fear grips Andhra district

Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh): Rain may have receded in the worst-affected Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, but locals are not ready to believe that the worst is over.

Over 50,000 people, who were shifted to relief camps, are not willing to return to their homes, fearing another spell of heavy rain. Such is the case of seven-year-old Mohammad who still hasn’t recovered from the rain surge on June 22.

Water entered Mohammad’s classroom and he, along with 24 other students, had to take shelter in the first floor of their madarsa in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, where they remained stranded in floodwater for several hours.

“On Friday night, we were sleeping on the first floor. When we came down, we saw that water had entered our madarsa. It's level increased further. Then again we went upstairs,” a student, Mastan said.

The impact was so bad that the next day out of 25 students 18 returned to their homes fearing another spell of heavy rain.

“People still fear that water will come again. People call each other saying that tanks will breach or it will rain again for another 24 hours. That's why last night children slept with a lot of fear,” Head of Darul Sabil-ul-Momineen in Nandyal, Mahboob Basha said.

Similar fear is prevailing in other parts of the district with many people still spending nights in relief camps. The district administration, too, believes that the locals badly need a dose of confidence.

“Kundu was in spate and 18 colonies were marooned. And people were continuously calling us that they have to be rescued. We'll have to talk to them, console them saying that nothing is going to happen and give them confidence,” Kurnool District Collector, M Dana Kishore said.

The authorities, however, are not surprised with people’s reactions because it's the first time in 15 years that people have seen so much of water in an area notorious for drought.
