Patna: The flood in Bihar has left behind destruction and distraught families which are now ready to give up their children for adoption.
Sukhiya Devi is among them. Her husband has gone missing after the deadly Kosi floods and after struggling for 25 days to feed her four children, Sukhiya Devi has finally decided to seek an NGOs help, urging them to adopt her kids.
“I want to give my kids for adoption so I can move into the city and earn a living,” she reasons.
The NGO activists agree. "The family has lost its breadwinner. The children are small hence it’s important an NGO adopted them,” says an activist Prabhash Kumar.
With no male member to take care of the family, Sukhiya has been finding it hard to find a place in the over-crowded relief camps.
"We do not get either food or shelter in the camp. It’s best to not live there,” she says.
As the waters of Kosi recede, there are more tales of human misery coming to fore.
Like Sukhiya, there are hundreds of mothers, facing the prospect of having to part with their children to ensure them a better life.
