Bhubaneshwar: Orissa is facing the prospects of floods with the Mahanadi River overflowing it banks.

About 14 lakh cusecs of water have been released from the Hirakud Dam so far and Puri, Cuttack, Kendrapada and Jagatisinghpur districts will be the worst hit.

All schools in the four affected districts have been shut down. For last two days Orissa has been battling heavy and continuous rain and strong winds caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

Over 2500 villagers in coastal Orissa have already been shifted to nearby cyclone shelter centers.

There have also been reports of damage to large numbers of homes in many parts of the state.

"Water is going to be released through the Naraj barrage which is going to cause very heavy floods in the Mahanadi system. Actually the floods will affect four areas - Kendrapada, Jagatsingpuri, Puri and Cuttack," Relief Commissioner NK Sundar Ray told CNN-IBN

Electricity supply has been disrupted and road links were cut off in some parts of the coastal districts.

According to some reports two people having died due to a wall collapse in Bhadrak and Jajpur districts.

Meanwhile, it is raining heavily in other parts of the country as well.
