Bihar flood waters leave children traumatised

Shreya Dhoundial, CNN-IBN

Seharsa: In Bihar, the floodwaters are receding but for many, the trauma remains. At relief camps across the state, children especially are struggling with Kosi's terrible legacy.

One such children Gudiya has lost her voice since she screamed while fighting the flood 10 days ago as the waters of an angry Kosi gushed through her village in Madhepura destroying everything.

The mother Sita Devi refuses to believe that her daughter will never speak again.

Doctor PK Singh who is attending Gudiya thinks that it is probably the shock which has left her speechless and that there is little hope that she will ever speak again.

He also adds that they have referred her to other doctors but the chances of regaining her voice is of little hope.

Across the relief camps there are many more little children like Gudiya who are displaying post traumatic stress disorders, but in a catastrophe like a flood they often become the first victim and the last priority

Another mother, Chaya, has been trying to to make her 10-year-old son, Mayank, have a bath for the last 12 days. The boy’s grandfather says that ever since he saw the floods, Mayank has refused to go anywhere near water.

Similarly, Rachna brought her children on a bamboo in the night scared of the water.

The fear of Kosi lives on in the minds of little children like Gudiya and Mayank.
