Rains ravage Barmer, 96 dead

Barmer: Flash floods continue to wreak havoc in Rajasthan's Barmer district where 96 people are reported to have drowned.

Many remain stranded in the district despite the Army flying 3,500 people by helicopter to higher ground. Food packets for about 2,000 have been distributed in the area.

Livestock in the district has been badly hit too, with 47,000 animals dead. There are now fears of an epidemic once the flood waters recede.

While efforts are on to rescue thousands of stranded villagers, the floods have changed the course of hundreds of lives.

Malwa, one of the worst-hit areas close to the Pakistan border, was once a village of wealthy Muslims.

Today, it's mourning not just the death of 39 people but the loss of all livestock, livelihood and hope.

"I picked up my child and climbed a tree but I could not save the rest of my family," recounts a resident, Quazi Khan, who lost 14 members of his family in the floods.

"We contacted the administration, but no one believed that there could be a flood here. We had to wait for 17 hours before help reached us," he recounts.

Quazi is not the only one. Every family in the border village of Malwa has its unique tale of struggle and survival to tell.

Fifty-year-old Channi Khan climbed on top of the village school, after waking up one morning to find his bed surrounded by water.

"My nephew contacted the administration but help came 46 hours later," he says.

Once proud owners of big houses and cattle, these families are today surviving on whatever relief that comes their way.

Crops have given way to mass graves and they are now left with nothing but makeshift tents to live in.

"Forget seeing, I've never even heard about so much water. It's ruined everything," says another resident of the village, Thodi.

Once it was a mirage of water and today, ironically, it is a river that shimmers in front of them. Heavy rains have dried up all their hope.
