Hoshiarpur (Punjab): Fancy weddings are passe now. NRI grooms have found a novel way to sweep their brides off their feet. They are flying high in post-nuptial bliss!
This almost looks like the usual Punjabi marriage with the works, colourful clothes and rituals, followed by Indipop naach-gana. But what's new in it is the way the couple goes after bidai (send-off).
It's not a car! Oh boy, it's a helicopter!
"I had never thought that I will go in a helicopter. That's really nice to hear it," beams Anureet, the bride in this particular wedding solemnised in Jalandhar.
The NRI groom took his wife home to Amritsar, shelling out Rs 5 lakh to hire a chopper. This is not a one-off instance. Now, it's a trend that is fast picking up among the affluent in Punjab.
"The trend is more prevalent among NRIs. They don't mind spending money. They just believe in showing off," MD of Dhillon Aviation Ajay Beer Singh testifies.
Dhillon says three more couples have already booked the helicopter service for the coming year. But what is it that makes the Punjabi grooms go flying to their brides?
"Something different, something nice I want to gift my future wife. And it's something exciting," says Parvinder, a prospective groom.
