Fog delays flights, people stranded for hrs

New Delhi: Every year fog brings the Delhi Airport to a standstill. Flights are delayed or cancelled and passengers are left stranded.

Delhi was fogged out yet again on Tuesday. Rail and air traffic took a beating as heavy fog enveloped the city for the second consecutive day. The Delhi Airport which boasts of one of the most advanced aircraft landing systems came to a grinding halt.

A passenger says, "We boarded the plane. We were in it for four hours and we were with five children. There was nobody to listen to us and the pilot was the worst person I've ever seen in my life. Nobody was there to cooperate. The people in the plane were saying it is not their fault. Is it our fault? We are paying for it.

Every year airlines assure you of extra helplines - SMS updates and information on their websites. Low cost airlines even promise snacks for their unfortunate passengers, but most of this never happens.

This year too was the same story - over 24 hours of waiting, no food and no place to sit - it clearly wasn't a happy journey for the passengers at the Delhi airport. The Delhi airport now has two runways equipped with the latest Category 3B landing system that allows landing in up to 100 metres visibility, but it is of no use.

Air India is the only one with trained pilots and planes to make use of this system. Low cost airlines like Jetlike and Spicejet have neither trained pilots or the planes necessary to use the landing strip. Jet Airways uses Boeing 737 planes which are not compatible with the CAT 3B system.

Low cost airlines don't train pilots for CAT 3B as it costs Rs 12 lakh per pilot and disrupts operations.

But here's the chilling fact - even with equipment and training, if the visibility drops below 100 meters, your flight cannot take off. In short, fog and travel will never be the best of mates.
