Chennai: Some classical music, temple folk songs from Tamil Nadu, Tamil Sufi songs from Nagoor, Bohi chants by Tibetan monks and to pep it up all, veena, drums and dholak.
Well, this was what the Earthsync festival had for the audience this Saturday at the Buck theatre in Chennai.
“It's very nice to be with everyone. All sing well, and it gives you a lot of peace,” said a monk from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery.
"We've a lot of folk artistes in the country who're really good. This is an effort to push them forward,” said music composer, Paul Jacob.
It all started as a project by a few musicians to document the folk music in tsunami-hit regions in a few countries.
But now, it has gone much beyond all that and taken the shape of a fusion concert incorporating the rawness of the folk and the refinement of the classical.
And the good news is, this is just the first time. In times to come, it's finally going to be hip to listen to the good old folk music.
“We realize that among the newer forms of music, it's not hep to play folk. What we're trying to do here is to make it relevant in the urban context," says producer Sonya Mazumdar.
