Madurai: It’s not uncommon to see people donating food on a festival or a birthday. But imagine doing this everyday.
Krishnan, who became a chef at a five-star hotel at the age of 22, serves three meals a day to 150 homeless people.
Almost all of them are mentally challenged. These are people invisible to most of us. But Krishnan realised five years ago he couldn't turn a blind eye anymore.
"I was working for Taj, it was very nice. I came here on a week's holiday. I saw a very old man, nearly 80 years old, literally having his own human waste for hunger,” he says.
Krishnan quit what most people would call a great job with a great salary and changed his life around.
He set up a community kitchen called Akshaya Trust, drew up a fantastic menu and created a committed team of cooks.
"Will you eat leftovers? No. will you eat ration rice? No. will you eat the food which is not good? No. I eat good food. I love food. I want to eat tasty food. So, I should give them the same quality food,” he says.
Day or night, Krishnan's food packet finds the right people, ensuring - that while those who eat it might not know who brought it – they sleep on a full stomach.
