Gondar (Haryana): It's a festival Bollywood loves. Many married Hindu women across north India celebrate Karva Chauth - the one-day ritual fast for the well being of their husbands.

But in Gondar village in Haryana, the festival is taboo. Newly-wed Santosh Rani says she was looking forward to the shopping and dressing up for her first Karva Chauth, but she was to be disappointed.

“It is my first karva chauth but my mother in law has told me that no one celebrates it here. Though I find it strange but we have to go by what the elders have told us,” says Rani.

The reason has to do with a temple - built in honour of a woman named Imrat Kaur, who according to legend found her husband's corpse here on Karva Chauth day 250 years back, and committed sati on his funeral pyre. Villagers say the festival brings bad luck.

“I have been married for 11 years now. Following the path that has been told to me by my family and villagers. This is considered a bad omen day and I came to know from my mother in law that we don't celebrate this day here,” says another bride, Jasso.

The taboo extends to two other villages in the district as well. So for brides like Santosh, the movies will continue to be the closest they can get to celebrating this festival.
