New Delhi : During Diwali if crackers are fun, then what comes along with it is inevitable pollution that can cause trouble to many.
The Augustine family has made their annual escape from Delhi to avoid the Diwali pollution. Poonam Augustine is asthmatic and for the past 12 years Diwali for this family has meant simply running away from the city.
“Festival of lights has become festival of frights, it has become one of the cruelest festivals and every time I look out of the window I get scared of another attack,” says Poonam.
Last year pollution level in the capital post DIwali was reportedly the highest in three years and that triggered Poonam's worst asthma attack ever.
The family had to spend 5 days in the hospital watching Poonam struggling to breathe. And it was worse for their 6 yr old daughter Aaliya.
The firecrackers we burn contain: 75 per cent potassium nitrate, 15 per cent carbon and 10 per cent sulphur. They release gases like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide creating havoc for an asthma patient.
“They create Bronchospasm, the lungs go into constriction,” Dr Kishore.
A study by Vallabhbhai Patel Chest, Delhi states that 1 out of 20 Indians suffer from asthma and in case of children it is one 1 of 10. Not all of us can escape the city like Augustines but here is what you can do to be prepared.
- Increase your inhaler dosage
- Keep nose and mouth covered with wet cloth
- Take a flu shot
- Avoid Ibuprofen, Nimusilide, Asprin only take paracetamol
