New Delhi: India's financial capital Mumbai was crippled last Wednesday and now New Delhi appears to want to inflict similar pain on Pakistan's fragile economy.
Minister of State for Commerce and Power Jairam Ramesh on Friday told CNN-IBN that this is hardly the time to talk about trade and investment with Pakistan.
Trade initiatives which were in the pipeline have now been shelved. These include:
- Setting up of a modern check post at Wagah for smoother trade
- Opening up of more bank branches in each other's countries
- Running more goods trains between the two countries
Apart from that, even the proposed visit by a planning commission delegation to Pakistan has now been called off as have been the discussions between the commerce secretaries.
All these are not the only elements of coercive diplomacy.
Siachen and Sir Creek talks have been put off indefinitely, cricket in the immediate future is ruled out and Pakistanis will find it harder to obtain visas for India.
Which means it is not going to be business as usual with India.
“They perpetrate such terror. Such perpetrators need to be brought to book,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says.
But nothing seems to have changed for Pakistan. On Friday, it once again ruled out access to India's most-wanted fugitives Dawood Ibrahim and Jaish-e-Mohammad's Maulana Masood Azhar.
“We will give India unconditional support to identify the criminals and take action against them,” Pakistan Prime Minister’s advisor on interior Rahman Malik continues to claim nevertheless.
