For the crew, Gandhi... was a labour of love

Mumbai: It’s a subject that has fascinated historians, writers and now filmmakers.

Mahatma Gandhi’s life has been chronicled on the big screen in many memorable films.

But now a new film explores the troubled relationship he shared with his eldest son Harilal.

And for that matter, filmmaker Feroze Abbas Khan and producer Anil Kapoor wanted to get it just right for their film Gandhi My Father.

The film follows the troubled relationship between the father of the nation and his son Harilal.

So even as the sets and locations were painstakingly treated for an authentic feel, the actors also had to go the extra mile to get under the skin of their characters.

“There is very less material on Harilal Gandhi whose role I am doing. I guess there are some letters that he had written to Gandhi or Kasturba Gandhi. And whatever material Feroze gave me, I read it several times,” says actor Akshaye Khanna.

For Khan, the director of the play Mahatma versus Gandhi, and producer Anil Kapoor its been a subject close to their hearts. And for the two it was a film, just waiting to be made.

Says producer, Kapoor, “After I had heard the script from Feroze, I decided that the film must be made.”

“My relation with Anil is not that of a director and a producer but we are friends. And the two friends have made a film,” says Khan.

So it’s a slice of history on the big screen, as the Mahatama's life and times continue to fascinate both filmmakers and viewers alike.
