Noida: Fifty-six days and a thousand twists later the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday sought to unravel the the sensational murder case of Arushi Talwar and Hemraj in a press conference held in New Delhi.
On a day when all the three accused in the case — Dr Rajesh Talwar, Krishna and Rajkumar — were produced in a Noida court, the CBI sought to clear the cobwebs over what has now come to be the most convoluted and controversial murder case in the country.
Dr Rajesh and Nupur Talwar's teenaged daughter Arushi and their manservant Hemraj were found with their throats slit on May 16 in their Noida residence.
Dr Rajesh Talwar was later arrested as a prime suspect by Noida police. However, when the CBI took over the investigations Dr Talwar's office help Krishna was taken into custody as well. A few days later, Rajkumar, the domestic help of the Durranis — the Talwars' close associates — was also arrested.
The three suspects as well Arushi's mother, Dr Nupur Talwar, were subjected to polygraph and narco analysis tests, but the central agency found no concrete evidence pointing to the crime.
On Friday, after days of speculation in the media about the progress in the case, Joint Director, CBI, Arun Kumar briefed the press.
Investigation Begins
Kumar began by admitting that since CBI took over the case from Noida police a fortnight later, the scene of the crime had been badly messed up and trampled upon. However, the agency managed to collect some samples from the crime scene.
Kumar said Nupur Talwar was subjected to lie detector test because the first one was inconclusive. He added that in both Rajesh and Nupur Talwar's polygraph test, no deception was recorded.
He said, this was the reason why Dr Rajesh Talwar was not subjected to narco analysis test. Kumar also emphasised the fact that there was no evidence so far indicating Dr Rajesh Talwar's involvement in the crime.
Kumar said, that CBI has filed an application in the court stating that there was neither a case diary nor evidence against Dr Talwar when Noida police arrested Dr Rajesh Talwar.
The Night of the Murder
The CBI Joint Director also said that experts found that when the air conditioner in Arushi's room was switched on there was no sound that could be heard outside.
That was probably the reason why her parents could not hear Arushi's scream on the night of the murder. Arushi also had a sore throat and so could not scream at the top of her voice, Kumar added.
The officer also claimed that both Rajesh and Nupur were sleeping in their room when the murders took place.
Kumar also added that Krishna emerged as an important suspect after Nupur said that when she didn't find Hemraj the day Arushi’s dead body was discovered, she made a call to his mobile phone. The phone was answered by Krishna, who used to stay nearby.
"The entry into the house was friendly and Krishna was one person who used to visit Talwar residence very regularly," Kumar said.
“Dr. Talwar divulged that two days before the incident, he scolded Krishna and he (Krishna) was agitated and had discussed the incident with his friends. All the stories regarding Arushi and Hemraj was given by Krishna himself, who also tried to misled the investigations," Kumar added.
Krishna, who had an aggressive tendency, was subjected to various tests. He was arrested on June 13 and confessed to the crime. He also took the name of Vijay Mandal and Rajkumar.
Tests done on Rajkumar revealed that he was also involved in crime and he confessed to the crime after second scientific test.
During the narco analysis test on Rajkumar he said that Hemraj had called them.
Krishna, Mandal and Rajkumar had alcohol and then went into Arushi's room. They tried to sexually abuse Arushi but when she resisted they hit her with an iron rod.
They then went to terrace and strangled Hemraj and locked the door. The trio then came down to the room and slit Arsuhi's throat.
Evidences
"There was one AB+ blood group on the pillow of Arushi. This indicated that the murderer carried the blood of Hemraj, whose blood group was AB+, to Arushi's room and down the stairs. The injury found during post mortem supports that she was hit with a blunt object earlier and then killed later, Kumar said
"Vijay Mandal was subjected to tests Mumbai. We arrested him today following the tests," he added.
Kumar claimed that all the results were based on forensic evidences and scientific test reports.
"We are trying to corroborate statement and scientific results that we have," he said.
