New Delhi: It's the end of a 37-year-old journey. It was in a village in Dhalai District in Tripura that Hamidur Rahman, a sepoy in the Mukti Bahini during the Bangladesh Liberation War was killed in 1971.
But not before single-handedly capturing a Pakistan army post and silencing a deadly machine gun at the cost of his life.
Awarded the Bir Srestho after his death, Hamidur lay a forgotten hero in this corner of Tripura. Now, the Bangladesh government is taking back his remains to be kept in a war memorial in Bangladesh.
"We will cooperate fully with the Bangladesh government,” assured B B Das, DM, Dhalai.
Hamidur's grave has fallen prey to development. His remains are now under a pond but villagers like Abdul are happy that Hamidur's remains will finally go back to the land he fought to free.
“My father knew Hamidur Rahman well when he crossed over for the war. From childhood I have been watching this grave here, I asked my father about it. He said that it is Hamidur rahman's grave. During my school days I used to clean the grave,” said Abdul Ali, a local resident.
A delegation from Bangladesh will take back the remains of Rahman from this part if Tripura in the first week of December ahead of the 37th Bijoy Dibas, the anniversary of the Bangladesh liberation war on December 16.
So when Hamidur's mortal remains go back to his homeland, it will be a long cherished journey and a long awaited tribute to a war hero.
