Port Elizabeth: Uruguay star Diego Forlan spoke of his disappointment at missing out on third place in the World Cup after losing the playoff to Germany for the right to claim the bronze medal position.
The Celeste battled back from a goal down to lead 2-1 early in the second half, with Forlan himself scoring a fine volley, but die Mannschaft quickly hit back and snatched the victory late on with a looping header from Sami Khedira in what was an entertaining encounter.
“We did a little,” the Atletico Madrid striker is quoted as having said by La Observa. “We were there to win third place. We made a couple of mistakes and the game was done for.
“We’ve enjoyed the World Cup.”
Oscar Tabarez’s side were not expected to go deep into the competition, which led to Forlan proclaiming that his side’s achievement over the past month has been “spectacular”.
Uruguay’s fourth placed finish eclipses any effort made at the Finals by a Celeste side since 1970 and matches their best ever position when competing outside of the American landmass.
