New Delhi: As the debate to strengthen India's sexual assault law continues, former chief election commissioner T Krishnamurthy has suggested immediate suspension of MPs and MLAs facing criminal charges. He also says that jurisdiction of these cases should be in fast-track courts.
"In my opinion, all serious crimes should be covered under fast-track courts. As far as the suspension of MPs or MLAs is concerned, there must be a code of conduct among legislators that once they are chargesheeted by a competent court, they should be suspended because right to contest election is not a fundamental right. The government servants can be suspended, lawyers can be suspended, why not the legislatures? I think it should be done immediately without any hesitation," Krishnamurthy said.
This came on a day when the Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir asked all High Courts to set up fast-track courts to deal exclusively with offences against women.
The delay in disposing such cases might be one of the factors for rise in crimes against women, said CJI Kabir in a letter to all the chief justices of High Courts, and added that the time has come to deal expeditiously with such cases.
