Bangalore: The stage is set for Former Maharashtra governor S M Krishna's comeback into state politics. But with his arrival as head of the State Congress Election Committee, it is a top-heavy state Congress that's headed for the Assembly polls. And with at least nine Chief Ministerial aspirants, not everyone seems excited with his much-hyped return.

“I don't know anything, he's coming on 17th or 18th,” said KPCC President, Mallikarjuna Kharge.

On being asked how Krishna could benefit the party, Kharge was non-committal.

“Let him come, he'll explain how and what. We’re only guessing things won't work, let's see after his arrival,” he said.

As the state heads for polls in just under two months, the big question for the country's oldest party remains – how to put up a united face for the voter?

The advantage this time, though, is the delimitation. The new allotment of Assembly constituencies has shown more urban constituencies.

Banglaore, which had just 16 Assembly segments earlier, now has 28, spread over five Lok Sabha constituencies. Krishna's tech-savvy image could help here and his vokkaliga or Gowda caste credentials could help win votes of Gowdas angry with Deve Gowda's political bungling.

But Deve Gowda's party isn't worried.

“The only elite class of vokkaligas dwelling in urban centers may have an inclination towards the high-tech image of Krishna. As far as rural vokkaligas are concerned, they're intact with the party and prefer Deve Gowda to Krishna,” said JDS spokesperson, Y S V Datta.

The congress may do well to remember that the party went into the last Assembly polls with Krishna as the number one Chief Minister in the country. But the party lost nearly 1/3rd of its Assembly seats with 31 of the 45 Ministers in Krishna's cabinet losing because of their urban tilt.
