Former IOC chief Samaranch getting well

Madrid: Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch was expected to be released on Friday from the Madrid hospital where he was admitted two days ago after suffering a dizzy spell.

Officials at the Hospital Clinico said the 87-year-old Spaniard had responded well to treatment and would be released sometime later in the day.

Samaranch was hospitalised on Wednesday after becoming dizzy during a meeting with city officials. He was kept in the hospital so that doctors could adjust his treatment for high blood pressure.

Samaranch served as IOC president for 21 years from 1980-2001.

He was hospitalised in Switzerland in 2001 for ''extreme fatigue'' and in Barcelona for high blood pressure. He has also received regular dialysis treatment for kidney trouble.

As honorary IOC president for life, Samaranch has continued to attend various IOC meetings.
