Mumbai: There has been nationwide rage against Union Minorities Affairs Minister AR Antulay's controversial comments on the circumstances leading to the death of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare during the Mumbai terror attacks.

Antulay's comments are being criticised by former police officials of Mumbai who say the politicisation of such sensitive issues should stop.

"Why has he made use of death of a poor police officer whom we all mourn, for his own political purpose," asks former commissioner of Mumbai Police Julio Rebeiro.

Police officers say there is no doubt that Karkare was killed by Pakistani terrorists and even those who were tough on politicians when they held high posts say politics over his killing is deplorable.

"The sacrifice of these martyrs being used for some political purpose is a sad thing," YC Pawar, former Joint Commissioner of Mumbai, says.

Police officers know as encounter specialists also offer similar reactions.

"They were doing their duty and it has nothing to do with politics. We must stop this politicisation at once," Sachin Vaaze, a former encounter specialist in Mumbai Police, says.

Many of the above former Mumbai Police officials know Antulay well and feel he is only sticking to his remarks keeping in view the forthcoming General Elections and hopes to play the minority card.

But police officers feel any attempt to politicise terror attack should be strongly opposed even by all parties.
