Srinagar: Years of stress, sedentary lifestyle and dietary habits have led to a rise of heart diseases in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Because of this rise in the disease, the state has become the second largest market for pacemakers after West Bengal and the country's leading private hospital chain is taking advantage.
The Fortis group has opened a hospital for cardiac care in Srinagar.
"It is alarming that 10 per cent of Kashmiris have heart diseases, which are comparable to cases in the metros. However, now we have got specialised treatment in Srinagar also," says Dr Tapan Ghose, Fortis Hospital.
The Fortis group has signed a 10-year agreement with the Srinagar-based Kyber Medical Institute (KMI)
The new hospital aims to provide treatment for heart diseases at affordable rates. It also aims to provide other specialised treatment.
"We are shortly going to start off a heart attack center, with an emergency room. Each bed will have its fixed channel monitors. It’s going to be a real state art of set up, " says Medical Director KMI, Dr A K Dutta.
The building, which was once a cinema hall, is turning out to be one of the best cardiac hospitals in the country and patients say the 52-bed hospital is a big help.
