New Delhi: The death of Forward Bloc workers in police firing in Dinhata, Coochbehar district, is "very unfortunate", West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has said
"It is a very unfortunate incident. We have instituted a magisterial inquiry into it," said Bhattacharjee in Delhi on Wednesday after meeting after meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Forward Bloc, the second largest partner of the ruling Left Front government in Bengal, on Wednesday organised a 24-hour shutdown in the state to protest the police firing.
Bhattacharjee said he had spoken to Forward Bloc's state unit chief Ashok Ghosh on telephone in this regard.
This is the first time in the 31-year-old history of the Left Front in the state that workers of a constituent party were killed in police firing.
It is also the first time that an alliance partner gave the call for an anti-government bandh.
