Chandigarh: Four gay couple in Chandigarh tied the knot on Friday after the Delhi HC decriminalised homosexuality last week.
Dressed in bridal attire, Deepak alias Sapna is delighted that he can enter into a marital affair with long time partner Jarnail Singh.
“Though the High Court order is not valid, we will fight for our rights,” says Deepak alias Sapna dressed in red bridal dress.
Three couples have reportedly tied the knot recently at the Mansa Devi temple in Panchkula.
“We knew each other for several years and met each other secretly and our parents did not agree to this relationship and marriage. Now that we have got a green signal from the courts we have got married. The decision of the court is a welcome one for us,” says Sachin who has got married to Aniket alias Sanjana.
“Before our marriage one of our friends had got married in a similar manner and so did we,” says Aniket.
But the sailing has not been smooth. Religious bodies like the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee have already come out against legalising homosexuality. Now a lawyer too has moved court alleging that Deepak's partner Jarnail is already married and that gays cannot marry.
“Jarnail Singh is also formerly married and has four kids. The Cout order has not said that these people can get married,” says lawyer Satinder Singh.
When the Delhi HC order came, there was euphoria on the streets, as homosexuals came out to celebrate.
But the lack of consensus to amend section 377 is making the community wary. While gay couples are openly proclaiming their sexuality, many still believe remaining behind the curtain would be prudent, until they are legally empowered to come out.
