Jammu/Srinagar: In Jammu and Kashmir the Hurriyat called for an Azaadi rally on Monday. The rally was quelled by tough action from security forces. Four people were killed in police firing as separatist leaders were put under house arrest again in the state.
The crowd tried to defy the curfew across the Valley in their march towards Srinagar’s Lal Chowk.
The Hurriyat's march was a non starter but four people were killed and 70 injured in firing across the state. In a significant development, north block confirmed that there was firing from the crowds as well in Beerwah and Bandipore districts.
Most Hurriyat leaders were arrested in a midnight crackdown.
“In the past rallies also there was damage to properties. That is why we are not allowing rallies,” says IGP Kashmir Range S M Sahay.
Meanwhile, in Jammu as protests broke out, curfew clamped in Kathua district for 72 hours. The Amarnath Sangharh Samiti has threatened to boycott talks unless the SSP and IG of Jammu are transferred.
A final solution to the land row will come about only after talks with leaders in the Valley. Sources say an announcement could be made during the month of Ramzan. For the moment the language of the agreement on the use of land is being fine tuned.
“The land should go to the Amarnath Shrine Board for the purpose of the yatra and the Board will administer it,” says Leela Karan Sharma.
After three rounds of talks, it's a cautious optimism towards the next dialogue that follows. Both the government and the Sangharsh Samiti are increasingly feeling the pressure for both sides know that from this point onwards things will only get worse if not sorted out.
