4 killed, 6 injured in Rajasthan incident

Kota: Four people were killed and six injured as an under construction bridge on the Kota-Udaipur by-pass road on the Chambal River collapsed in Rajasthan, an official said on Thursday.

The district administration said that at least 50 others are feared trapped in the debris.

"We have till now been able to recover four bodies. Chances of more dead under the debris are high," said a district administration official.

"We have launched relief operations and have sought the army's help," the official said. The reason behind the collapse of the 50-metre bridge is being investigated, he said.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened at around 1745 hrs IST.

The bridge collapsed suddenly leaving a number of construction workers, around 250 who were working at the site, trapped.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced a compensation of Rs 200,000 to the next of kin of each of those killed, Rs 100,000 to each of the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to the other injured.

bullet Cases have been registered against construction company Gammon India, Hyundai as well as the National Highway Authority of India. Two officers - including a Korean - have been arrested for the collapse of the bridge. Rajasthan Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said it was a case of negligence. He said the Korean officer held works for Hyundai while the second man arrested is named Subramanium and he works for Gammon India. He said that the Rajasthan government had ordered an inquiry into the matter.
