New Delhi: Police forces of four different states are claiming to have cracked the serial bomb blasts cases that have rocked the country in the past few months.

Yet, with every case seemingly cracked, contradictions are emerging in the investigations amongst the different state police.

The Gujarat Police says Abu Bashar, a cleric from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh (UP), masterminded the July 26 Ahmedabad blasts whereas Rajasthan Police say Shahbaz Hussein, a Lucknow businessman, planned the May 13 Jaipur blasts.

The Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra Police also claim that Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer heads the Indian Mujahideen, which has been claiming responsibility for the blasts.

But the Delhi Police contradicts these claims. They say 24-year-old, Mohammad Atif, who was killed in the Jamia Nagar encounter on September 19, was the head of the Indian Mujahideen and the mastermind of recent bomb blasts across India.

"Atif is the head of Indian Mujahideen. SIMI and Indian Mujahideen were both involved in the blasts and both are linked to Lashkar-e-Toiba," said Karnal Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Delhi, in his press conference on September 20.

A month after the Varanasi blast in March 2006, the UP police arrested Waliullah, Imam of the Phoolpur mosque in Allahabad, calling him the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (HuJI) mastermind behind the blast.

"This was a revenge of the Gujarat riots and the demolition of the Babri Masjid," Waliullah had allegedly said about the reason for triggering bomb blasts.

But Delhi Police say Atif led the Varanasi attack. "This group is responsible for the blast at some courts in UP," Karnal Singh had claimed.

The UP police also blame HuJI for the blasts in Gorakhpur in May 2007."Mukhtar alias Raju and Dr Tariq Kasmi were behind the blasts in Gorakhpur. They were also behind Faizabad blasts. They were also responsible for the Sankat Mochan temple blast in Varanasi. Kasmi is HuJI chief in UP," Brij Lal, Additional Director General, UP Police had said on December 22, 2007.

But Delhi Police contradicts UP Police. "Mohammad Saif (under arrest) and Sajid (killed) planted the bombs in court in Varanasi. Arif and Junaid, both absconding, planted the bomb in Lucknow courts while Shahjad and Shadab alias Malik (absconding) planted the bombs in Faizabad courts. Atif along with his accomplices Saif and Salman had a role in the Gorakhpur blasts," Karnal Singh had said.

There are discrepancies in the claims being made by state police forces. Perhaps in the days ahead further police investigation will help fill in the gaps and missing links. But the need for a federal agency to investigate terror cases has never been greater.
