New Delhi: Dense fog and bitter cold enveloped the national capital early Friday morning, sending shivers down many an early morning walker and throwing rail and air traffic off gear.
The worst hit were the morning air travelers as runway visibility at the New Delhi airport dropped below normal, delaying most in-bound and out-bound flights.
The runaway visibility dropped to 125 m on Friday morning forcing the authorities to initiate the sophisticated CAT 3 B landing system. The low visibility procedure was initiated at the airport at 0240 hrs (IST) when the runway visibility dipped to about 50 m.
A large number of flights slated to depart for domestic destinations like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Nagpur, Ahmedabad and Jammu were delayed, airport officials were quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
There were several cancellations too including Air Deccan that cancelled its flight to Jammu.
The train services to the capital were also affected.

Killer Cold
Winter has set in firmly and it was a bitterly cold morning in most of North, East and Northwest India.
The upper Himalayas and most of the foothills have been blanketed in snow and icy winds are blowing across the plains.
At least 14 people have already died of the cold in Uttar Pradesh. Heavy snowfall has occurred in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Though the Srinagar-Jammu highway has reopened for traffic after two days, it's still snowing heavily in many parts of the state.
The met department says minimum temperatures will fall by two to three degrees over the northwest plains and Rajasthan over the next couple of days.
