New Delhi: More Reliance Fresh stores have been attacked, this time in Orissa.
Local traders and vegetable vendors in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday vandalised two Reliance Fresh food outlets in the city. The entry of large retail outlets are being seen as a threat to local vendors.
The Uttar Pardesh government has shut Reliance outlets fearing a law and order problem.
The government said it had received intelligence reports that the stores could be ransacked by small businessmen. Of the five stores shut down, two are in Greater Noida.
Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand West Bengal and Delhi have been the other states which have witnessed such protests.
The government says the Reliance fresh stores will remain closed till September 30, but this is a matter open to reconsideration.
Smaller businessmen however say that their protest against the corporatisation of retail sector would only grow bigger over time. They have also called for a protest on October 10 in Mumbai.
