New Delhi: Special Economic Zones (SEZ) continue to be a cause of conflict in West Bengal.
Four people have been killed and six injured in a fresh bout of violence at Nandigram in East Midnapore district. A clash broke out between CPM supporters and the protesting farmers early on Sunday morning.
The farmers are part of the land eviction resistance committee, formed to protest against acquisitions made by Indonesia-based.
Though the state government has not issued a notification for land acquisition in Nandigram, the situation has been volatile since last week as farmers took to the streets to voice their anger.
Confirming the incident IG (headquarters) Jogesh Chatterjee told PTI that a bullet-riddled body of a person, identified that of Bharat Mandal, was recovered from Kangra village.
Trinamool Congress MLA Subhendu Adhikary said that nine persons were injured as CPI-M activists attacked villagers at Khejuri village.
However, the local CPI-M leaders denied allegations of their involvement in the incident.
Meanwhile, The Trinamool Congress headed Bhumi Uchched Birodhi Committee has called a 24-hour Nandigram bandh on Sunday.
Sunday's violence came amidst tension in the areas following clashes in the area last Wednesday.
The violence in Nandigram came in the wake of Trinamool Congress led agitation against land acquisition for Tata Motors project in Singur in Hoogly district.
