Mumbai: Light-hearted drama Barah Aana, Nandita Das's directorial debut Firaaq and Straight hit the theatres on Friday.
Firaaq
The big ticket this weekend is actress Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq. Set against the backdrop of the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots, Firaaq revolves around ordinary people who were either victims, perpetrators or those who chose to watch the carnage silently.
Featuring multiple stories which intertwine as the narrative plays out Firaaq's starcast includes Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal, Shahana Goswami and Sanjay Suri in major roles. The film has already won several prestigious international awards including the Best Feature Film at the Kara Film Festival.
Straight
This week's second release Straight is a funny tale about Pinu Patel, an under-confident, well-off businessman based in London who runs a restaurant called Gaylord.
Enter two characters Kamlesh and Renu - who completely turn his life upside down but most importantly leaves him confused about his sexual orientation.
What ensues is Pinu's attempts to come out of the closet and figure out if he really is gay or straight, and find true love. Starring Vinay Pathak and Gul Panag, Straight is directed by Parvati Balagopalan.
Barah Aana
Also releasing this week is Barah Aana - the story of three unlikely friends: an old but stoic taxi driver, a middle-aged mischievous watchman and a young and ambitious waiter.
In this light-hearted drama, the three friends stumble onto a crime and then realise that it's an easy way to make fast money money. But the plot takes a new turn when the situation spirals out of control, leading them into a direction none of them want to take.
Featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz and Arjun Mathur in the lead, Barah Aana is directed by Raja Menon.
