Friends, neighbours say UK suspects innocent

London: Mohammed Haneef and Sabeel Ahmed are the two doctors from Bangalore have now been named suspects in the attempted bombings in UK and are currently in custody, being questioned by the police.

However, friends and family are fast moving forward to assert their innocence.

Dr Abdul Hamid is a former colleague of both Sabeel Ahmed, the doctor detained near Liverpool, and Dr Mohd Haneef, held for questioning in Brisbane. Hamid was also Sabeel's landlord and met him frequently.

Dr Hamid is upset over the media speculation around the case and says that it's unfair to jump to any conclusions.

"Innocent until proven guilty is the case and I think that should remain the case. I hope the British legal system upholds this and protects the two because I firmly believe that these people are innocent," says he.

Hamid says Indian doctors are apprehensive over the incidents, especially the government's proposal to review policies for doctors.

"Some of my Indian colleagues are worried during these harsh times. It is already tough for them after NHS transformed its recruitment process, now this is going to make it tougher," says he.

A former colleague of Haneef and Sabeel believes that they were innocent, but will the investigations into the failed terror threat also prove them not guitly? That's difficult to say at the moment.
