Jammu: Border Security Force on Sunday foiled an infiltration bid across the International Border in Pragwal Sector near Jammu, when a group of over 12 intruders came close to the border fence, lobbed a grenade and opened heavy fire.
“The fire exchange lasted 40 minutes. They used grenades and later resorted to heavy volume of fire,” Commandant PS Diman, 26 Batallion BSF, said.
Two weeks ago, two jawans and four intruders were killed during an infiltration bid at the Line of Control in Poonch sector. Earlier in August, infiltrators made a similar attempt in Kanachak sector, when they crossed over and took a family hostage. In May, heavy firing was used during an infiltration bid at the Samba border.
Officers say earlier the infiltrators used to sneak in but now the trend is changing.
“We are witnessing a change in strategy even after the change of guard in Pakistan. They are using heavy fire arms from the Pakistani side and try to come close to the fence,” Additional DIG, BSF, J B Sangwan, says.
BSF has increased strength on the borders and is also clearing thick grass growth. The embankment ahead of the fence, which had been constructed after the Kargil war, is now being removed.
“We had embankments ahead of the fence, which they had started using to their adavantage,” Sangwan adds.
With the state going to polls soon and the winters about to set in, desperate attempts to infiltrate are on the rise.
