Pune: The Film and Televison Institute of India is known for churning out many Bollywood stars and directors. But the institute shifted its focus to screen writers recently.
On Saturday and Sunday the FTII held its first-ever conference of screenwriters to discuss issues plaguing 'the art' of scriptwriting in the Indian cinema.
"No producer is looking for a script. They already know what they want," filmmaker Anurag Kashyap says,
But eventhough a scriptwriter defines the shots the directors’ calls for, most of the scriptwriters are often sidelined.
"We don't give the importance we should give to the script and the script writer. It has become more of a subordinates position than not. Now because the director is responsible for everything we have to maintain the sanctity of the script to a level. If you respect the script you should show it the way it is written," Javed Akhtar says.
Madhur Bhandarkar says, "It is the writer's script. In all my films I have done the script. I originated the germ of my scripts."
While the debate of an original script vs an 'inspired' one continued, all vied for original scripts and scriptwriters.
"We need one film that is completely independent with its work. If it comes out and becomes a hit on the box office, this film will become an example for people to follow till then scriptwriting will not improve," Anurag Kashyap says.
FTII has not announced any dates for future screenwriter's conferences but with this conference, it has at least managed to raise a very important point.
