Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday refused to allow commercial cultivation of BT Brinjal for now.
Ramesh put a moratorium till the time a consensus is not built within the scientific community on whether BT Brinjal is fit for human consumption or not.
The Minister said the period of the moratorium is indefinite, there is no hurry as India has more than 4000 varieties of brinjal. There is no issue of food security involved.
But it was not an easy decision to make especially when Government's own expert committee had said that BT Brinjal is safe for human consumption.
Face the Nation debated: No BT Brinjal for now: Should india allow genetically modified food items?
