Mumbai: With India gearing up to host the Commonwealth Games next year, the Home Ministry seems worried about people polishing their manners. But what is the solution to those relieving themselves at public places, especially along the walls of various premises across the cities.
The CNN-IBN team caught up with various people who had already used the roadside as a public toilet or were about to relieve themselves in the open air.
When asked as to why they had not cared to use the toilet, the answers were varied.
"I have nor relieved myself."
"It was an emergency."
"So many people relieve themselves out in the open, why haul me alone. What difference does one person's action make?"
It is a sight common not just in Mumbai, but across the country.
Pedestrians make a beeline for the nearest wall to relieve themselves, answer nature's call. Who is to blame, many ask.
The Additional Commissioner of Mumbai, R A Rajeev said, "People lack the basic civic sense. People come-in from so many different places and therefore do not respect the city enough to keep it clean."
But people blame lack of public facilities for the malady.
Some say the public loos are smelly, unclean and lack proper water supply, drainage and ventilation. Apart from being unkempt and unhygienic, these public utilities are also located at desolate places, with remote access.
People argue that when they are desperately searching for such facilities with a full bladder, it often makes them want to relieve themselves at roadsides.
