Bangalore: The BJP's victory and its leader B S Yeddyurappa's elevation to the top job have come as great news for the astrologers of Karnataka.
The influence of soothsayers over the new government is now the talk of the town and future is looking bright for the fortune-tellers of the state.
One such high-profile astrologer is Daivagna K N Somayaji from Bangalore. He goes as far as to take credit for Yeddyurappa's rise to the chief minister’s post.
“Yeddyurappa will be a very good CM. I knew that he will make it this time,” he says.
Yeddyurappa is known to consult astrologers frequently. Beginning from deciding the time to cast his vote, to taking oath as Chief Minister, for him their approval is primary.
He even affected a change in his name eight months ago, replacing an “I” with a “D” in his quest to become CM. But his party, the BJP says there's no need to read much into it.
“There’s no astrology here. There’s nothing like that,” said senior BJP leader, Jagadish Shettar.
Opposition party leader, M Mallikarjuna Kharge says, "It is his belief. I believe in good work. I know that good work will do good to you."
But the astrologers might just become a cause for embarrassment instead of helping Yeddyurappa in the smooth running of state. Critics believe their influence over the new chief minister is a matter of serious concern, not only for the BJP, but also for the people of Karnataka.
After all they don't want a few astrologers to decide the fate of their state.
