G-20 summit, leaders agree and disagree

London: Amidst all the warmth, a difference in emphasis seems to have surfaced between President Obama and Manmohan Singh, at least in their public statements, on tackling terrorism from Pakistan.

“We are very concerned about terrorists who have made camp in the border regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan,” says Barck Obama.

Manmohan Singh spoke in a quite different tone; he said he is prepared to discuss all issues with Pakistan including Kashmir, but not unconditionally.

“Pakistan must assure the world that its territory will not be used to perpetrate acts of terror. That is the minimum precondition for any discussions between India and Pakistan,” says PM Manmohan Singh.

On ways to tackle the economic crisis, an agreement was announced, but here too some uncertainty lies below the surface.

An agreement was declared to increase IMF resources from 250 bn dollars to a tn dollars, with much of the new money coming from the US, the EU and Japan.

But again, there is no immediate restructuring of the IMF in sight, and no word on conditions for loans.

Obama says that they have initiated action, but there is no saying whether it had produced results.

"They have agreed on a platform which if implemented will make a substantial difference over the next two or three years," adds Manmohan Singh.

As all leaders say, only a process, another G20, and talks beyond G20.
