New Delhi: The family of budding cricketer Gagandeep, who was murdered in October 2009, claims they have been denied justice.
While the nation celebrates India's World Cup victory, sorrow prevails at the house of Gagandeep in Kanpur.
A budding Ranji hopeful, Gangandeep was killed for objecting to the murder of a shop owner. But his killers have now been set free by the Meerut District Court, for lack of evidence, as all eyewitnesses turned hostile. Gagandeep's family is now demanding a CBI enquiry.
"It's my plea to Chief Minister Mayawati that my son's killers must not be spared and must be punished. A CBI enquiry should be put in place to punish my son's killers," said Gagandeep's mother Gurpreet Kaur.
The family also alleges conspiracy behind Gagandeep's murder.
"What is the reason that the same witness has turned hostile? Seeing this I feel that there has to be some conspiracy behind my son's killing," said Gagandeep's father Surendra Singh.
But one of the eyewitnesses, Sharif Miyan did speak to us and confessed the witnesses are afraid of the alleged killers.
"Families of the eyewitnesses were scared as they were attacked. The henchmen of the accused also visited their homes," said Sharif Miyan.
This is not the first time criminals have been let off in Uttar Pradesh, due to lack of rules for witness protection and justice has been denied yet again.
