New Delhi: The election season has begun to see the revival of the Gandhi topi or the Gandhian cap.
Cap makers in Pune have been flooded with orders. A cap manufacturing unit in Pune's Manchar village is caught in a flurry of activity.
With elections round the corner, Bhagwan Topi's employees are working round the clock to produce Gandhi caps that politicians across the country sport.
The proprietor of Bhagwan Caps, Balasaheb Bhute said, “With the upcoming elections, demand for our caps has shot through the roof.”
To make a cap, first the cotton cloth is washed and dried. The caps are cut and stitched and finally starched and ironed for that crisp finish.
Bhagwan Caps employs 15 female cap makers who produce as many as 1500 caps a day. There are other such units in the village and Manchar produces upwards of 500 caps per day.
A cap maker, Vandan Morde said, “We earn one rupee per cap and each of us makes at least a hundred caps a day.”
The caps sell for twenty rupees each and are sure to be a huge hit this election season.
