Arki (Himachal Pradesh): Loyalty can pay rich dividends. A cook of the Gandhi family who has worked for Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and now Sonia Gandhi has been rewarded with a ticket to the Himachal Assembly polls for his son.
Padam Ram has been a cook with the Gandhi family for 30 years now. He already has a petrol pump in his name, and now his son Prakash Chand Karad, is the proud possessor of an Assembly Ticket.
But Prakash denies all charges of favouritism.
“It is a personal thing. Someone's father can be related to CM also or even Dhumal has children. That has nothing to do with this and it is nothing like that. I have been working for 15 years for Arki constituency as a Congress representative,” says Prakash.
Three-time Congress MLA from Arki and Deputy Speaker in the outgoing assembly Dharampal Thakur says it is a big blow to him.
He has now thrown his hat into the ring as an independent candidate.
“People know better. It is a democracy. People are aware. They know what their rights are. And also what parties are doing,” says Dharampal.
His supporters say a cook's son got the ticket only because of favoritism. They even say that Dharampal has got a raw deal and has been cheated by the Congress High Command.
People here say that favoritism works and two persons close to the Gandhi family and the powers that be have been given tickets in the coming assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh.
However, the Congress loyalists who have been denied the tickets are hoping that the anti favoritism wave will win the election for them.
