Jammu: In stark contrast to stressed army personnel shooting their colleagues in Jammu and Kashmir, a Central Reserve Police Officer (CRPF) has chosen satyagraha, a half-shaven moustache and one meal-a-day to register his non-violent protest.
Shiv Chander Jha, a deputy commandant of the CRPF, furiously types complaint letters for a cause. This is his satyagraha against what he calls a violation of his fundamental rights.
"I was born in Champaran - the karam bhoomo of the Mahatma (Gandhi) and my grandfather was a freedom fighter. That’s where the idea of satyagraha came from," says Jha.
In 2004, when Jha was posted in Chennai, CRPF raided his home without a warrant or a complaint against him. He lodged a complaint and even used the Right to Information Act to prove his point.
“There was no complaint or charges of corruption against me, so how could they search me?” asks Jha.
Waiting in vain for an apology or response from the authorities, Jha took a new look and a new attitude to work.
He's even written to the President asking to "end his life with dignity". He was suspended for indiscipline in July this year.
“I apprised the President that despite his directions no action was being taken . It means I have to lead a life without dignity which has no meaning for me,” explains Jha.
Jha's case has been referred to the Prime Minister and Home Minister but as he waits for action, the half-moustache and his Gandhigiri continue to ruffle many.
