Ganesh fest's over, counting is on

Mumbai: It's been a week since the Ganesh festival got over, but the tedious task of counting donation money begins now for many temple authorities.

People at Lalbagh temple are busy counting the money offered to Lord Ganesh during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which ended a week ago.

Last year the temple collected over Rs one crore in terms of donation. And this year, the amount is expected to go up.

“Around 10 boxes have been deposited and this year the counting is till going on,” says Treasurer of Lalbagh temple Rajendra Srivastava.

Counting so much money with denomination ranges from Rs 1000 notes to 25 paise coins is not an easy task and will probably take three whole days.

First, the notes are separated from the coins. They are then washed with detergent and ironed to get that mint fresh look.

“The amount keeps on increasing every year. We get tired of counting,” said Shiv Kumar.

Once the counting is over, temple authority will spend the donation money on the education and medical treatment of the poor and needy.
