Mumbai: Varun Gandhi's hate speech seems to have triggered a war between the two top rival underworld gangs of dons Chhota Shakeel and Chhota Rajan.

The lawyer of Rashid Malabari, the Chhota Shaekeel shooter who was allegedly planning to hit Varun, was shot dead on Thursday.

Naushad Khashim was gunned down allegedly by a gunman from the rival Chotta Rajan gang.

“Two men came on bike and fired three-four bullets at him. We don’t know who they were and we are investigating into the matter,” said Superintendent of Police, Subramaneshwar Rao.

Speaking with a private television channel, he said, "I claim responsibility for the murder. My boys did it. I had warned him earlier not to take any case related to the D company. By doing this I am serving the nation. I want to totally eliminate D-gang. There are many more D-men on my hit list".

Thirty-eight-year-old Rashid Malbari, a close aide of gangster Chhota Shakeel, has already confessed his plans to assassinate Varun Gandhi and Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik.

Police believe Malabari has information on how Chhota Shakeel's mentor Dawood Ibrahim operates.

Reports say Naushad Khashim was on Rajan's hitlist for long because he has consistently taken up cases of accused believed to be close to Dawood Ibrahim.
