Gang wars blip on Delhi's crime chart

July 13: A 41-year-old doctor robbed and beaten up near Mayur Vihar by car borne attackers.

July 11: 2 assailants shoot dead two traders near Amar colony, 25 minutes later, they shoot another man while trying to snatch a motorcycle.

July 8: A 54-year-old mobile store employee is shot nine times by two assailants near Vikas Marg after he refused to let go of a bag containing rs 1.3 lakh.

New Delhi: Two weeks ago, one person was shot dead while trying to resist a chain-snatching attempt. In fact, over 300 chain-snatching cases were reported in the first four months of 2008.

Police sources say most violent thefts committed in south Delhi are being committed by a gang of youngsters led by one Om Prakash Bunty.

According to police officials 90 per cent of the crimes are committed by first timers either because they want to live a more affluent life or because of a family dispute.

“The most recent trend is that youngsters have become ready to rob and kill because they want to have the latest gadgets and latest clothes...there are ver few heinous crimes that are reported,” says DCP North East Delhi, Jaspal Singh.

Police officials say its not so much the hardened criminal, but the trigger happy youngsters looking to make a fast buck that are they are now looking out for.
