New Delhi: Refusing to give relief to Delhi schools in the nursery admission case, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld High Court’s decision that the process be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Ganguly Committee report.

This in effect means that the ban imposed by Delhi High Court on interviews for nursery kids and their parents at the time of admission remains.

A bench comprising the Chief Justice-designate K G Balakrishnan and Justice D K Jain, however, granted liberty to the petitioners to approach the High Court afresh for raising their objections vis-a-vis the Ganguly committee recommendations.

Earlier, south Delhi’s Shriram School and Vasant Valley school had filed a petition challenging the December 8, 2006 order of the High Court.

The petitioners have challenged the 100-point criteria recommended by the Committee terming it as an attempt to take away the autonomy of private schools.

The schools contended that the High Court did not pay proper attention to the objections raised by them regarding the recommendation/100-point scale for selection of children for admission to nursery.

100-point formula for Nursery Admissions Management
bullet No interviews with children and parents
bullet 20 points for residence being within a three-km range of school
bullet No points for residence being beyond 10-km radius
bullet 20 points to parents’ qualifications, siblings in same school preferred
bullet 5 points to girl child
bullet 5 points to disabled children
bullet Heavier weightage to single parent
bullet Common admission dates for all schools
