Kolkata: West Bengal Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh says that the efforts are on to remove dead bodies from the mangled remains of Uttarbanga Express and Vananchal Express, which collided in West Bengal's Birbhum district on early Monday morning.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Singh said number of those killed in the train collision has crossed 50.
"The information that we have got suggests the number of dead may have crossed 50 and the number of injured is over 100," Singh told CNN-IBN.
He said that although the injuries suffered by some of the passengers were minor, the authorities are making all efforts to ensure that they received proper medical aid.
"We have also arranged for some volunteers so that, in the event of requirement of blood, it is taken care of," he added.
Singh also said that the hospitals in Burdwan and Kolkata have been put on alert. He said the National Disaster Relief Force has also been called in to aid the rescue operations.
"There are a few bodies trapped inside the mangled bogies and we are making efforts to get the gas cutters.
"Some gas cutters came but they are not up to the mark. So, we are getting some heavy duty gas cutters to remove those dead bodies. I don't think there is any other person who is alive who is inside. But, we are looking at that aspect also," Singh said.
Regarding the cause of the disaster, he said prima facie it seemed like an accident, and ruled out the possibility of foul play.
