Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested associates of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani midway during a press conference on Thursday.
They were arrested from a hotel where the leaders were holding the press briefing. Police say the arrested leaders will be kept under preventive detention.
Hurriyat Conference leader Geelani, however, wasn't present at the meet.
A recent rally by Geelani had come under scanner after it was alleged that Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizbul Mujahideen militants had participated in it and displayed their flags.
Geelani had returned to the Valley after a renal surgery in Mumbai and was greeted by thousands of supporters who reportedly waved Islamic flags and shouted pro-freedom slogans.
At the meeting Geelani said his party would settle for nothing less than complete freedom from India. It was Hurriyat hardliner's first public meeting this year in downtown Srinagar.
Earlier on Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had lodged an FIR against Geelani for anti-national slogans and holding a public meeting without prior permission.
Geelani and his Hurriyat colleagues Ashraf Sehrai, Masarat Alam, Saleem Geelani and Shafi Lone have been booked under section 13 of the unlawful activities act.
