New Delhi: A change of guard is finally happening within the BJP. Leaders - so far popular as generation next leaders - are now taking on the baton themselves. Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitly, both general secretaries of the party and two of the most articulate voices in BJP, are now set to lead the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
"I am very happy and I think that this is a new beginning in the BJP. All of us will work under the guidance of Advani ji because he is the leader of the Parliamentary party."
Sushma Swaraj will begin her journey as an understudy to L K Advani, but it's a journey that can take her places, especially since Advani himself had looked at the Leader of Opposition's chair as the natural post for a future prime ministerial aspirant.
The other man who also fancies his chances in the future is someone who was looked upon as an adversary to Sushma Swaraj. Arun Jaitly - who has so far maintaining that he is reluctant to take up a Parliamentary post - is thinking of taking a crack at the BJP President's post which falls vacant in December this year.
With these two critical decisions taken, the focus now shifts to who will be the next BJP president. From Narendra Modi to Murli Manohar Joshi to even Venkaiah Naidu - a former president himself - the choice will also determine what direction the party wants to take, more centrist or extremist again.
After three decades, the Atal-Advani era comes to an end in the BJP. It's an era which saw the BJP rise to power and then fall dramatically. The challenge before the future leadership is now to solve the identity crisis which seems to have engulfed the BJP.
