German mother withdraws rape complaint

New Delhi: In a major turnaround, the German researcher who had accused the Goa Education Minister Babush Monseratte's son of raping her 14-year-old daughter, has withdrawn her complaint.

This comes just five days after Rohit Monserratte was arrested.

The reasons behind her decision are a mystery.

Fadela Fuchs had filed her complaint against Rohit on October 14. She had also demanded minister Babush Atanacio Monserrat be charged with abetting the crime, as the mobile phone registered in his name was used to send "obscene" messages the German minor. Following the victim's statement and medical examination last Sunday, Rohit was arrested.

Human rights lawyer Aires Rodrigues alleged that the alleged victim's mother was doing so under duress as she is now disillusioned with the way the case is moving.

"The mother feels that the whole system has failed her and that's the reason she's given a letter to the Calangute police station stating that the system has failed her. Her daughter who was a victim is sought to be made an accused in the matter and that she does not want to proceed with the case. I will be discussing with Governor Sidhu the whole case. So the German lady will also be present while I discuss the case with Goa Governor Sidhu. We shall be addressing the press after the meeting. The mother and daughter feel victimised," said Aires.

While the case against Rohit has been dropped, the charges against PWD Minister Churchill Alemao's son Warren are being investigated.

The girl's mother had filed a case against Warren on October 24 for sexually assaulting her daughter.
